Karma

The Buddha's words, 一切唯心造 (일체유심조), "All things are created by the mind" are the most widely known teachings among Buddhist sayings. This saying tells us that the root of all things lies in the mind. All emotions we experience, such as pain, joy, love, and hatred, begin in the mind and are ultimately eliminated by the mind. It contains the meaning that if you want to solve problems in life, you should first look back at your mind.

Among Buddhist sayings, there is one that is simple but carries a deep meaning. It is the teaching of 諸惡莫作 衆善奉行 (제악막작중선봉행), "Do no evil and do all good deeds." This saying, which tells us to avoid all evil and do good deeds, shows the basic attitude of Buddhist practice. It contains the meaning that good thoughts, good words, and good actions ultimately bring happiness not only to ourselves but also to those around us. This Buddhist saying guides us on the path to finding peace of mind and meaning in life by doing good deeds through small daily practices.

In Buddhism, everything that changes and disappears is called "impermanence." The Buddhist saying, 諸行無常 (제행무상), "all things are impermanent" means that everything in this world is always changing, and nothing lasts forever in that change. These teachings from Buddhist sayings awaken us to an attitude of mind that does not cling to the changes and sufferings of life, but naturally accepts them. When we acknowledge that everything can change and disappear, we can find peace of mind.

The teachings of the Buddha often mention that letting go of attachment brings true freedom and happiness. The Buddhist saying, 無執無畏 (무집무외), “No attachment, no fear” contains exactly this teaching. The attachment to something and not letting go ultimately creates fear and anxiety. However, the moment you let go of that attachment, you gain freedom and peace of mind. Buddhist sayings convey the Buddha’s message to let go of attachment and live a free life.

The Buddhist saying, 不怒 (불노), "Don't get angry" tells us that not getting angry is true wisdom. Anger is like a fire that burns itself out, so even though it may feel good to get angry for a moment, it will eventually harm yourself and those around you. The Buddha tells us to control our anger and find peace of mind, and he teaches us that the process is the path to wisdom.

The Buddhist saying, “All dharmas are without self (諸法無我 제법무아)” tells us that all our experiences and emotions are ultimately temporary. The emotions we experience, such as sadness, joy, anger, and fear, will eventually disappear and pass with time. This Buddhist saying conveys the wisdom of the Buddha to not dwell on the difficult moments of the present and to remember that everything will pass.

In Buddhism, compassion (慈悲) means the mind that regards the suffering and pain of others as one's own and wants to help them. The Buddhist saying "Great Compassion (大慈大悲 대자대비) emphasizes the practice of unconditional love and compassion. When we treat the world with a compassionate heart, we can feel a deep connection with others, and the happiness and peace that come from it are indescribably great.
